Lyrics

For The Tree That Fell

Please, if you could,
for this tree uprooted in the wood
send a note to the hearts
that hurt like hell should.
Send it to all who grieve
and make perfectly clear that it
may have fallen
but it's still here
may have fallen
but it's still breathing
still stretching its leaves
to the crown canopy of the sun.

Tell them to still feel the rain.
Tell them to no longer fear the sun.
Tell them:
"Now that you've woken up
to that empty space you sought,
Realise time won't heal a god damned thing."

I'll take them by surprise
might even paralyse
when the sun shines on them
and they no longer turn to ice.

It's time to dig up everything they lost
because forgetting just isn't forgiving
and no matter how much it feels needed
there are just some things that can't be buried.
So find the map they invented drawn out with self-doubt
and dig till you reach the roots that they forgot existed.

Then tell them:
"Just know that even though you fell
and even though you lost face
everything you stand for
still stands today.
The roots make it this way.
They belong to you."

When the Canary Dies Run Like Fuck

Hope once breathed
in the dreams that now keep you from sleep
the future is shaped by bad memories
and all you can see is what you lost
so more is lost each passing day
to a future shaped by your history

You remember that day
how hard you done fell
when the faith dried up
and all welcomed hell
and the black skies above did empty
you remember their faces
you remember their goodbyes
you remember what it was not to live a lie
and then their backs you saw them turning

sometimes you'll feel
like you're letting yourself down
sometimes you'll feel
like you held your tongue too long

But you'll see see in time
that your fire is still burning
and whatever mistakes you've made
whatever wrongs you've been wronged
can still be made right
you've earned your stripes
don't give up on the hope

You reinvent yourself
you reinvent history
you reinvent the future

Return to Victories

Maybe the sky i saw was broken
it burned so bright
that night
you'd think the road was ending
and i feel it like that
but i can't see it yet

When i open my eyes
the wide world is still there with me
the mere sight a flood of hope
rivers still flow outside the city
rains still wash away the night
it takes back with the tide
the bad memories the lies
and whatever is meant will be
a beginning and ending
to this story
and return a victories
comes the dawn sky

We built walls to hide
the cracks inside
but i got a feeling
it's a return to victories
that's buried inside

And i feel it like that
but i can't see it yet

No More Bad Future

No more bad future
but the damage long since done
no love here
no warmth here
no fathers for the sons
the damaged stand by faithfully
while another bouquet laid
the street never smelt so sweet
for the athletes and their games

While the lawmen keep earning
mothers are yearning
their children are burning

The rest just keep on marching
their battered hearts and busted minds
desperately looking for veins
tried to numb their hearts with the powder
but still they felt the pain
the pills bring in a new day
bring in shelter from the war

No matter what they change
before they come to play their games
they'll still see the tags with the names
on the flowers on their graves
these hard streets will never sleep
can't force someone to make a change
when they have nothing left to save
they just don't get it

Post-Youth

You give me a reason to quit the drinking
and i'll give you a million more
to get afraid
the fear is everywhere
and you've seen it before
seen it got all built up in my eyes
you lost your nerve
the swagger has gone
you want none of this

As bright city lights
make us close our eyes
and have sweet dreams of darkness
this is no place for fear
so suck it all up
and pass the bottle
tonight we'll drink to the past
and bury ourselves in the morning

This road
the old road
the familiar road
feels like home but we're not quite there yet

Face to face with my fear
my eyes now clear
I know what I must do
forgetting you's not the issue
it's forgiving myself

In the end
you've taken nothing worth holding onto
so keep that time
keep that pride
sooner or later you'll realise
there is a light that never goes out

But it's been so long
since I recognised
my own face
or the man i've become
though i know at last
on this road
i belong

Time has been strange
always never ending
and you'll never let go
yeah, time has been strange
but you'll never let go

One day my dreams will meet my fears
take a piece of me
make a brand new start
i'll have to want it and my heart can feel no shame
